4 Exterior Paint Trends for 2021

It’s true – trends come and go. However, implementing your own personal style into your home exterior color choice will never get old. If you truly understand what your own personal style when it comes to decorating, you can’t go wrong. With that being said, our team at Paint Denver sees all kinds of visions come to life with a new coat of paint. Here are 4 exterior paint trends we’re seeing in 2021.

Warm Whites

White will never get old and will always be an easy choice when it comes to upgrading your curb appeal. This is our most recent large-scale paint project for a massive residential home in Denver. The client wanted to upgrade their dated, faded brick exterior to a clean, modern white. It made a world of difference. Homeowners are focusing more on dark accents and greenery in their landscaping to bring a pop of color to their exterior.

Speaking of pops of color in exterior projects, exterior paint trends are showing pale blues and greens as accent colors. You can use these shades on your shutters or on your door. It subliminally draws the eye to the house and works to make the home more interesting. The natural shades are playful yet tame.

Two Tone Trending

You heard it here first, two-toned exteriors are back. We thought we’d seen the last of that in the 80’s and 90’s but the two-toned look is experiencing a renaissance. This 2021 paint trend incorporates more modern colors like slate and beige to add dimension and intrigue to the home. It works as a great accent to abnormal architecture as well.

Back in Black

This trend is something we never thought we’d see, to be honest. Black is in and looks incredibly chic if done correctly. Going dark on your home’s exterior will give you that edge over the neighbors and works as a fantastic compliment to natural materials on the exterior. Consider a darker shade if you have wooden or metal accents on the exterior of your home.

2021 Paint Trends

Whether you’re looking for something bold, or just a bit of a facelift for your home, these choices are hot and popular right now. If you’re interested in taking on a home improvement project this year, give Paint Denver a call. We’re happy to provide a comprehensive quote, free!

Wrapping up Your Project? Here’s Where to Recycle Paint

Oftentimes home renovation projects leave people with a lot of leftover supplies. If you don’t plan on using the paint for any other projects or simply just don’t want it taking up room in your shed, here’s how and where to recycle paint.

Latex Paint Disposal

If you just have an inch or so of paint left at the bottom of the can, you can simply leave the open can outside to dry out. Be sure to keep it out of reach of children or pets. Small amounts of latex paint will dry relatively quickly and you can throw away the can.

However, if you are left with larger quantities and don’t know where to dispose of leftover paint, you might want to consider investing in a box and some cat litter or shredded paper. Pour the paint into the box of litter or paper and wait for the concoction to dry. Then dispose of the box and the empty paint can.

Get Creative

If you want to get more creative or are interested in recycling leftover paint, try blending several different cans of leftover paint for a base coat on your next DIY paint job. This can be used to bring new life to cabinets, outdoor wooden items, or even a bed frame or hutch. While this new shade might not be the one you plan on sticking with, it will be an inexpensive way to substitute for a base coat.

Paint Recycling Locations

Recycling paint is more convenient than ever in Colorado. There are many locations that will recycle or take back old paint. Different rules apply for latex and oil-based paints, so make sure they’re kept separate. Contact your local government office for a recycling center near you.

Dispose of oil-based paint the same way you would hazardous waste. Check with your local waste management company for hazardous waste instructions.

Free Paint Recycling

Residents and businesses in Colorado can take unwanted, leftover paint for recycling to participating paint retailers that have volunteered to take back paint. However, if you choose to dispose of leftover paint, ensure it is safe for the community and for the environment.

When to Hire a Denver Painter to Update Exterior Paint

Updating your home’s exterior paint is a big decision. From budgeting to choosing the right color, it’s important to make sure everything is in order before tackling such a big project. At Paint Denver, our team has over 20 years of experience in the industry. We’ll let you in on a few professional exterior painting tips to help you make an informed decision on when to tackle this project.

Keep Seasons in Mind

Spring and summer are the perfect time to update your home’s exterior paint job. Any Denver painter will tell you the weather is more predictable during this time of year. You want a dry, warm climate to optimize paint drying times and conditions. If the weather looks like it will be moderate for a several days in a row, a professional painting company will want to get the job done as quickly as possible to avoid possible interruptions or damages.

Curb Appeal

It is fairly easy to determine if a home needs a new exterior paint job simply by looking at it. If you pull up to your house and aren’t satisfied with what you see, chances are, a paint job will improve curb appeal tenfold.

Make sure to look at the exterior trim and accents as well as the main house siding. These aspects are often overlooked and can make a big difference in the appearance of your home exterior.

Paint Damage or Fading

If your home has suffered some sort of damage to the exterior, you may need to refresh the paint to restore its appearance. Hail damage and sun damage can impact the exterior paint on your home. Putting off fixing a damaged exterior paint job will only make the situation worse and can lead to more chipping and peeling. Better to hire a Denver painter early to avoid a more costly repair in the future.

Applying Pantone’s Colors of the Year to Your Home Exterior

For over 20 years, Pantone’s Color of the Year has influenced product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries. Everything from fashion to industrial design takes inspiration from these shades. This year, Pantone decided that 2021 deserved not one, but two colors.

At Paint Denver, we’re always looking for fun and innovative styles and shades to keep our work up to date. These exciting colors are perfect shades to incorporate into an upcoming exterior home painting job.

Illuminating

Warming and optimistic, Pantone’s Illuminating is reminiscent of strength and positivity. It is a color that encapsulates the promise of something sunny and friendly.

If you have dreams of tackling an exterior home painting job in the spring, this color will look beautiful in any Denver metro neighborhood. While yellow is often seen as a bold color choice for the exterior of a home, it can act as a stylish and exciting accent that brings a cheery feeling to your home’s aesthetic. Try using it on a front door or trim for an extra pop of sunny color!

Ultimate Gray

Gray has been a cornerstone color in interior and exterior style for year now. Practical and rock solid, this gray shade works in tandem to add sophistication and depth to its yellow counterpart.

Ultimate Gray inspires thoughts of solid and dependable natural elements which are everlasting. The colors of pebbles on the beach and natural elements whose weathered appearance highlights an ability to stand the test of time, this shade assures encouraging feelings of composure, steadiness, and resilience.

Using Pantone’s Colors of the Year in Your Exterior Home Painting Job

Tips for Choosing Exterior House Painting Colors

Choosing to paint your exterior can feel like a difficult task because of the labor and cost involved with exterior house painting. The pressure of choosing the perfect color can cause families to postpone the project indefinitely.

However, a fresh coat of paint can be one of the most beneficial and long-lasting home improvement projects you can tackle. Take it from the pros, there are good and bad choices when it comes to choosing exterior house painting colors. That being said, there are few tips you should take heed to ensure the color you’re imagining comes to fruition.

Take in the Surroundings

Start by looking at the style of your home. A ranch style home with brick detailing may be complimented best with a different color than a Victorian style home. Also, take note of the other homes in your community.

While you probably don’t want to look like a row of cookie cutter houses, you don’t want to stand out too much and reduce curb appeal for any future sales. If your neighborhood is filled with earth toned homes, you can’t go wrong by following with that theme.

Consider Trends, But Don’t Fall Victim to Them

It’s a great idea to consider recent design and architecture trends when choosing a new color for the exterior of your home. However, you should remember that they’re just that – trends.

Statement colors fade with every passing year and you want to be sure if you’re choosing a paint color based solely on what a magazine is telling you to do, you genuinely like it and imagine it lasting for years to come.

Take Note of the Landscape

Look at your house at different times of the day. One of the biggest problems we see as professional painters in Denver is paint color variations depending on sunlight. Is your home in broad sunlight all day long, or is it primarily in the shade due to large trees?

Sunlight and shade will give you different color hues, so make sure your landscaping is exactly the way you want it before you start making decisions on a paint color.

A Denver Paint Job That Will Last

If you’re unsure about your choices after considering all these variables, safe is always a sound decision. Two tints from the same color strip a few shades apart will always work well together.

Our team at Paint Denver has over 20 years of experience in the home renovation industry and can help you make a decision you’ll be satisfied with. Give us a call to discuss any upcoming projects.
