Interior home improvement projects are a common task to take on in the wintertime. Many people look to get their home looking spick and span for the holiday season, or even decide to take on the new year with a few project that will make your space more modern. If you plan to try taking on painting cabinets, you’ll need to take some precautions first. Here are a few tips from our professional cabinet painters to help make the process go as smoothly as possible:

Remove All Hardware

Removing all hardware from the cabinets is a key step before you begin your interior home improvement project. This includes handles, knobs, and hinges. this can be done fairly simply with some household tools, however, if you’re dealing with hardware pieces that have been in place for dozens of years, you may need to put your back into it. Our professional cabinet painters always say that this would also be a really great time to replace your hardware pieces if you’re trying to use something a bit more updated.

Sanding

Sand down the surface of the cabinets to remove any old paint or sealant. This will help the new paint to stick to the surface better. If you’re not sanding, be sure to at least clean the cabinets with a degreaser and let them dry completely before painting.

Primer

Once you’ve completed the previous steps, you’re ready to start cabinet painting! You’ll want to make sure that you’re using a good quality primer specifically made for cabinets or painting surfaces. Apply the primer with a roller or brush and let it dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Paint

Now you can finally start throwing on that beautiful new color! Choose the paint color of your choice (our professional cabinet painters always recommend consulting with a contractor first) and apply it to the cabinets with a brush or roller. Make sure that you’re using even strokes and getting into all of the nooks and crannies. Let the paint dry completely before adding any new hardware back to the cabinets.

Enjoy Your New Look!

Now that your project is complete, step back and enjoy your hard work! Painting cabinets can be a daunting task, but following these steps will help to ensure that the job is done correctly and efficiently.
