I once entered a home a friend had recently purchased. She bought it at a good price, knowing with a little tender loving care and a few home improvement projects, she would have a place she could live in and love for years.

She invited me over to take a look at the kitchen. It was the first place she wanted to spend her time and her money, and with good reason.

The cabinets were a twenty-year-old dark wood. The walls were stark white with a little yellowing going on. While it may have been the “in” thing once upon a time, now it screamed of needing an overhaul. A major overhaul.

Yet she didn’t have tens of thousands for a complete remodel. What would I suggest? Was it fixable?Paint: The Best Home Improvement Project

No problem. Nothing a little professional painting couldn’t handle.

We started by looking at the cabinets. They were in great shape, made of real wood (not cheap pressboard) and all shelves were sturdy, not warped. With a great base, they could easily be reused.

Painting cabinets in this circumstance, was a great choice for her. We selected a modern white – not too bright, not too washed out – and painted the cabinets inside and out. With new hinges and knobs, she was amazed at the finish product. It looked like a new kitchen.

That is, until we compared the modern white cabinets with the dingy yellow-white walls.

So once again we set out to discover how best to change up her walls and improve her kitchen once more.

She was vying for a modern look, so we finally settled in on a blue-gray paint. While her kitchen was small and without a large wall as her starting point, even the small half walls took well to the color. With a few accessories to match, she instantly fell in love with the kitchen once again. And realized her “new” home purchase had been the best choice she could have made.

Remodeling doesn’t have to take an arm and a leg. In some cases a day with your local professional painter can bring an old room back to life, and make you fall in love with your own home once again.
